Developing a Morning Routine

Developing a Morning Routine

It’s no secret that what you do in the morning has an impact on the rest of your day. Waking up late, skipping breakfast, foregoing a shower, and rushing through your morning rituals will automatically get your day off to a bad start.

To avoid having bad mornings, or bad days for that matter it’s important to develop a morning routine. This morning routine won’t only guide you into a better day, but it will leave you feeling more accomplished as well as more productive.

The two most important preliminary steps of starting a morning routine are getting enough sleep and waking up early (or earlier). It’s hard to start a morning routine if you are still half asleep and struggling to get out of bed, so always be sure to try and get 7-8 hours of sleep. It’s also difficult to get a a routine rolling if you don’t roll out of bed until the late afternoon. (If this sounds like you, maybe you should work on developing an afternoon routine).

Okay, so now that you know the prelimary steps, it’s time to get started. There are hundreds of things you can include in your morning routine, but it is important to find things that work for you. Here are some common things I do to get my mornings started. (Note, I don’t do all of these things, but I try to do a combination of a few every morning).

  1. Eat Breakfast.
  2. Check the stats on all of my sites.
  3. Respond to emails.
  4. Write an article.
  5. Go for a morning run.
  6. Shower.
  7. Relax outside.

Now, I know that many of these things probably sound boring or uninteresting to start a day, but each one of these things I consider an accomplishment in some way. And to me, that is what a morning routine should be, a series of accomplishments.

There is nothing better than getting a chunk of work/activities completed when the clock is still spitting out numbers that end in “a.m.”. This is what makes having a morning routine so rewarding. Knowing that you’ve accomplished a lot before many people have even stirred in their beds is an empowering feeling. Not only that, but it leaves you with a more clear schedule for the day so you can do what you want.

What do you do to get your day started?

    Awesome Dan.

My morning routine looks like this:

    Put off alarm

    Put laptop on my bed

    Check stats, check emails

    Look scared at the clock

    Rushrushrush to school

Not very good eh? Think I need to reconsider what I am doing in the morning, your schedule looks really awesome!

I've done that same thing plenty of times – Checking stats just always seems to take priority in the morning haha.

This is my summer schedule btw. I didn't do all of this during the school year- class started way too early, but I hope to continue this routine into next semester.

I’ve been more and more diligent about working out first thing in the morning. I have more energy during the day and don’t carry around that nagging guilty of not having worked out ;o)

I know exactly what you mean haha. Exercising in the morning just makes the day better somehow.

    Hey Dan (and everyone else),

Yeah, checking stats and catching up on e-mails is definitely necessary for morning routines! It can be really hard to just build up the motivation to do any of those things though…

I've found that media can really get you up and at em in the morning. I like finding pep that brings people into a more positive emotional state. I think this one really helps get me ready for the day in the morning – it's Jessica's daily affirmation (really funny): http://www.pepfly.com/a/6560

    Hope you enjoy!

My morning routine starts off on the toilet, then check emails, drink redbull, eat cereal :)

~This one is indeed true. It is good to accomplish things as soon as you wake up, so that, at the end of the day, you won’t tell yourself, “Oh my gosh, I forgot to do this, I forgot to do that”. You seem to run out of time.

Some of my morning routines are:
Jogging, eating breakfast, know my schedule for the day, play with my dog, call the people whom I am to meet for that day, fix things to bring.

That are some of my routines that somehow help me not to forget a thing. That would make my day a good start. At the end of the day, I am able to say, “Thank God! I was able to accomplish my works for the day!” That’s a good one for me.

Morning routines could also help reduce cramming and rush. =D

    • It is also a good routine to read newspaper, knowing the headline. And also, catching up with the emails. It is also good to sip a cup of coffee every morning.

My morning routine consists of oversleeping until the very last minute then literally having to RUN to the train station to make sure I’m not late.
