Don’t Pass Out the Week of Midterms

Don’t Pass Out the Week of Midterms

Midterm’s time is a very chaotic and confusing time for students. If you haven’t opened that textbook, you’re way past due, but late is better than never, so get to work. Get to work doesn’t mean pulling an all-nighter and forgetting you have a life. No, getting to work means finding the most ideal time in a day to study for the next few weeks. Now that you are studying and getting a grip of things, you need to remember your health. Yes, your health is important.

Sleep, Sleep, and more Sleep!

We’re not talking about sleeping until 3:00 in the afternoon, nope, getting eight hours or maybe ten if you need them should be enough. Just don’t forget this important part because without sleep you will not be able to function well during your exam. Yes, you might seem super hyper and alert during the week you went with only four hours of sleep and yes you might even brag about it to your friends. However, when your exam date comes, you will literally be close to dead-looking as that will get. Your brain won’t be able to tell the difference between a t-test and z-test formula in your statistics midterm or define Hamlet’s lines “To Be Or Not To Be?” You’ll be thinking, is that from Hamlet or Macbeth? Okay, so you get the picture, right? Sleep is important; no, it’s crucially, extremely, and mostly certainly necessary. Without sleep, you will literally lose your mind.

Food…Healthy Food, not Junk!

Yes, coffee might be the thing you think you NEED right now, but it might just be the thing you need to cut down on a bit. Don’t quit cold turkey thought because you’ll get all kinds of symptoms you don’t want to deal with right now. Just take it down a notch.

Food is essential and you need to eat healthy food on a regular basis. You need to cut down on the junk food, meaning chips, cookies, pizza, etc. Eat more healthy stuff such as salads, chicken (not fried), fruits, etc. You need to remember that just because you don’t feel hungry since you had your last coffee at 9:00 a.m. doesn’t mean you don’t need food. You obviously know by now that coffee makes you lose your appetite, so feed yourself before you pass out.

Keep Your Life Moving During Midterm’s Week…

Remember to keep things moving as normal as possible. Don’t get too distracted with studying, keep your life going. Eat regularly and sleep enough. Don’t over do anything, but also don’t under do it either; remember everything in moderation is the key.

I had to make a bulletin board at work that informed students about health and how it effects studying. I titled it "Healthy Body, Healthy Mind". It was a lot of fun to make and being a health nut helped.

Thanks for the tips. I was so hungry studying for my midterm yesterday that I got distracted and day dreamed about food! Next time ill bring some healthy food to the library.

    Jay,

I think the bulletin board is a great idea and something similar should be presented by colleges all over. Not once did any of my professors explain to us the consequences of not eating healthy or not eating at all. Last spring my midterms came during a stressful personal time and eating to me was no longer important. That is until my so called hypoglycemia(low sugar) symptoms started kicking in every single day of the week. That was a sign that I was not treating my body right. Day dreaming about food is another sign that our body needs to be fed :)
