If there is one thing that College Students get too much of, it’s emails. Our inboxes are constantly bombarded with emails from Professors, university events, friends, and more. Some of these emails, like a Professor notifying you that class is cancelled, are urgent and need to be read as soon as possible. However, we all know that it is inefficient and unproductive to check for new emails every five minutes. So, how are we supposed to read the urgent and important emails without constantly sifting through our inbox? Well, Google helps us out with this dilemma with the Google Notifier for Gmail.
Google Notifier works by displaying a brief update of any new emails from your inbox every 10 minutes. The notification unobtrusively pops up in the upper right hand of your display. The update will catch your attention enough to give it a quick glance, but doesn’t act as a distraction. If an email catches your attention and deserves a quick response, you can quickly head over to your mailbox and reply. The great thing about Google Notifier is that you can check your email without opening a browser or email client.

Google Notifier is available for both Mac and Windows. With the Mac version, you can link the notifier with your Google Calendar, so you’ll stop forgetting about that long-overdue homework you’ve got to finish. I haven’t tested the version for Windows, but with Google Notifier for Mac, an icon on the menu bar displays the number of unread message. When clicked, the icon gives easy access to your inbox, unread messages, and a “check now” function.(By default, Google Notifier will check your mail automatically every 10 minutes. If you need your mail checked in shorter intervals, use this quick and easy trick).
After using Google notifier for a few days, I can say that it’s a keeper. I am really bad about checking my email, so this is a much needed app for me. It puts new emails right in front of my face, so I can’t avoid an overstuffed inbox for long. With its streamline notification system that updates both new emails and upcoming calendar events, there isn’t a better way make sure you never miss an appointment, or that acute email from your History Professor telling you that class is cancelled.
(Please note that like most of Google’s software, Google Notifier is in Beta.)
